Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA)

  The basic objectives of this programme are to open a channel of admission to Computer courses for students who have done the 10 + 2 and are interested in taking up Computers as a career. After acquiring the Bachelor’s degree at IGNOU, there is a further educational opportunity to go for MCA at IGNOU or pursue Master’s Programme at another University.

The development of the course structure for the BCA programme has kept in mind, the current trends of encouraging students at the Bachelor degree level to have exposure in some areas beyond their immediate specialization. The curriculum of BCA includes foundation/introductory courses in English for computing, Humanities, Social Sciences and Technology. Some of the computer science related courses covered in BCA include topics like Computer Fundamentals, Data Structures using ‘C’, Graphical User Interface, Data Base Management System and Computer Organisation.


1. 10+2 or its equivalent with Maths as a distinct subject
2. 10+2 or its equivalent without Mathematics as a distinct subject. This category of students will have to register for MTE-03 and CIC in 1st Semester of BCA and successfully complete before registering for the 3rd year of the BCA Programme.
3. 10+2 vocational stream* in Computer Techniques/ Applications, or its equivalent, without Maths as a distinct subject. This category of students will have to register for MTE-3 in the first semester of BCA and successfully complete MTE-3 before registering 3rd year of BCA.
Program Contents

Master of Computer Applications (MCA)

The broad objective of the MCA is to prepare graduate students for productive careers in software industry/academia by providing an outstanding environment for teaching and research in the core and emerging areas of the discipline. The programme's thrust is on giving the students a thorough and sound background in theoretical and application-oriented courses relevant to the latest computer software development. The programme emphasizes the application of software technology to solve mathematical, computing, communications/networking and commercial problems. This Master's Degree Programme has been designed with a semester approach in mind.


1. Bachelor degree in Computer Science/ Applications/ Information Sciences/ Information Technology from a recognised/ deemed university.
2. Non-Computer Science B.Tech/ M.Sc/ other graduates (such applicants are required to pursue CIC concurrently with MCA 1st semester).
3. Graduate with PGDCA from a recognised/deemed university or its equivalent course of not less than one year from a State Board of Technical Education or its equivalent body established by the Central/State Government.


» The students who haven’t studied Maths at 10+2 level are required to do CS-60 in the first semester of MCA.
» The students enrolling for the MCA Programme who have completed the DEOACC O-level programme are not required to enroll for CIC.
